General Information

The West Rand is located in the most western side of Gauteng in South Africa. The West Rand extends from Randfontein in the west to Roodepoort in the east, and includes the town of Krugersdorp. It has taken European settlers just over a century to create its large but personable towns and efficient network of roads.

Despite being a separate municipal area, like the East Rand, the West Rand is included in the Greater Johannesburg metropolitan area. Nowhere else in Gauteng will you find as many natural wonders as you will in the West. Sanctuaries, wildlife reserves, conservancies and dams mingle with modernity and suburban development.

Activities in West Rand

The West Rand has a special activity for those interested in palaeontology: The World Heritage Site of Sterkfontein and the Wonder Caves. They both hold over 2 million year old relics and the Maropeng Visitor centre must be at top of your list to visit. If nature and wildlife are your core interests, then this is the best region in Gauteng to explore.

The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort, are world class and in the Krugersdorp area are the Ngonyama Lion Lodge and Krugersdorp Game Reserve where lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinos can be spotted. Please view our activity directory for more information.
