Interesting Places to Visit in Johannesburg
There are many fabulous places to visit if you are spending a few days in Johannesburg; here are just a few that can be enjoyed.
The Cradle of Humankind is a 47000 hectare world heritage site where apparently more than a third of the world's hominid fossils and over 9000 Stone Age tools have been found.
The Cradle of Humankind is only 45km Northwest of Johannesburg and while in the area you can also enjoy guided tours into the Sterkfontein caves where fossil skeletons are apparently still being uncovered. The Maropeng visitor centre will enthrall young and old alike with its bumpy and crazy boat ride through time, the daring psychedelic bridge and interactive displays...a supposed trip through the ages to modern times. A little more down to earth, a visit to the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve could have you witnessing lions, wild dogs and cheetah feeding times in their enclosures.
Alternatively consider the Magaliesburg and enjoy the greenery and veld flowers, especially in the rainy summer months and marvel in the knowledge that the Magaliesberg Mountain range is over 100 times older than Mountain Sanctuary Park Everest and half the age of earth. Some of the treats on the Magalies meander route include: The which allows day visitors to hike, mountain bike and swim in the river or swimming pool. The Van Gaalen's Cheese farm is a restful respite and you can enjoy a crisp glass of wine and cheese platter while your kiddies entertain themselves in the play area and watch the friendly farm animals. Drive around Hartebeesppoort Dam, the wall was built in 1925 and has a capacity of 205 million cubic metres. The Elephant Sanctuary invites guests to learn, feed and interact with Elephants.
If Hiking is your thing, then a visit to the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is perfect for hiking and mountain bike trails. The hiking trails are 4, 5 and 10km long and the mountain biking routes are from 8 - 11 kilometres long the terrain is typical of the Highveld varying from broad-leafed woodland and acacia savannah to protea-veld and savannah grassland. Large herds of eland, zebra, red hartebeest, blesbuck and wildebeest can be seen on the plains. Other places may include the Diepkloof Farm which was built in the 1800's. For the more adventurous River rafting in the Vaal about 120km from Johannesburg is a must, rafting season is from August to May, dependent on water levels.
